St. Joseph the Worker just sent out other creative ways to "give back" this holiday season:
- Put a donation jar at your holiday party. Even a few dollars can make a huge difference for someone in poverty.
-Have karaoke (or another group activity) at your next party and collect a donation for each song.
-Donate basic resources, such as gently used clothing (especially men’s shoes and pants) or collect items from friends, family or coworkers.

Forgot to mention that the ASU Museum of Anthropology has an exhibit showing the elements of an altar through Jan. 23, 2009. One artist has an altar on display to remember the mothers and babies who have died from abortion.
Musuem hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. See the museum's Web site, http://asuma.asu.edu/AncientOfrenda, for additional weekend hours and directions.

I find it very interesting and by no accident I am sure that the national elections fall shortly after 40 days of life. It is so vitally important that Catholics vote for Pro Life candidates. I wrote more about this at my blog http://rsaling.wordpress.com/2008/09/01/marketing-the-right-side-of-the-right-to-life/

I got an update from DPS last night that the Fraternal Order of Police helped establish a bank account to help the family of fallen DPS officer/paramedic Bruce Harrolle. Donors can visit any Chase bank and reference his name and account number 2915063065.

Direct cards and notes of condolences to the family in care of the DPS:
To the Family of Officer Bruce Harrolle
Arizona Department of Public Safety
PO Box 6638
Phoenix, AZ 85005-6638
Harrolle completed 40 successful air rescue operations in the last year.

I talked to two people in Sydney, Australia today who, once they learned what diocese I was from, immediately said with confidence what a great bishop we have in Phoenix.

The first was a priest at the vocations expo during World Youth Day. He was at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' vocations office booth collecting memories of passersby's favorite priests.

The second was an Australian correspondent for Inside the Vatican, a monthly Catholic news magazine. He saw that my name tag identified me as being with the Phoenix Diocese and immediately praised Bishop Olmsted's "Catholics in the Public Square" booklet. He said the Church needs more bishops like Bishop Olmsted.

Matt played "Your Grace is Enough" — and what I assume were other songs from his new album — for the nearly 1,000 pilgrims at the Youth Arise International festival in Brisbane, Australia July 10-14.

Although I returned to the room to get some work done, I heard his concert July 10 was phenomenal.

Matt and his band helped keep us centered in worship during the closing Mass of the festival as well.

Dear Ambria,
You are doing a marvelous job!
We gathered again this morning in the DPC chapel to pray for the pilgrims. Each of us prayed outloud for five pilgrims. We will keep it up until you're home!
Remember - Y'all are Pilgrims - not Tourists!
BXVI leaves Rome tomorrow (Saturday) for Sydney.
Peace and all good,

Ambria, you should try blogging from a computer already in the network or even try going to an internet cafe. We'd love to see some photos. Can you not access the gmail account either? If you need to get a calling card to get in touch with us, please do. You might also consider picking up an ethernet cord if you need it.

Hope all is well.

Dear Ambria and All,
Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Each day I am gathering the folks in the DPC chapel to pray for all the pilgrims. We pray that they will be open to the Spirit and that they will grow in faith and a commitment to Gospel justice.
Enjoy!
