Parish birthdays – June

If you made it to Mass this weekend, you may have heard talk about Pentecost being the birthday of the church. In the Phoenix Diocese, as in others I’m sure, parishes like to celebrate their own local birthday as well — the date marking the formal establishment or dedication of the parish.

10 of our 92 parishes have a June birthday including a set of twins.

One of our youngest parishes turns 5 this month, according to our diocesan history book, while our basilica marks the 130th year since its dedication. Here’s a list of parish birth dates. We haven’t heard about any formal celebrations — the list is simply for fun and a test of your diocesan knowledge:

  • (Twins?) Corpus Christi Parish in Ahwatukee (4,100 families) and St. Bridget Parish in Mesa (1,200 families) turn 26 on Sunday. Connect with St. Bridget on Facebook.
  • Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Queen Creek (1,800 families) turns 5 on Monday. (See article on recent statue dedication of patroness and archived article from parish dedication). St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Avondale (3,800 families) turns 36 on Monday.

Other birthdays:

  • St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Chandler     June 21, 1985 (anniversary article)
  • St. Margaret Parish in Tempe                            June 21, 1972
  • St. Mary’s Basilica June 24, 1881 (dedication date)

Early June birthdays:

  • St. James Parish in Glendale                             June 2, 1982
  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Tempe June 14, 1932
  • St. Maria Goretti Parish in Scottsdale              June 14, 1967

One Comment so far ...

[...] May saw 11 parish birthdays and June had 10. [...]
