Up-and-coming saints for February
Today marks the feast of Blessed Luke Belludi. It’s the third of five feast days for a “blessed” person you’ll find on AmericanCatholic.org’s Saint of the Day calendar.
Here is a look at these potentially up-and-coming saints:
-
Blessed John of Fiesole, Feb. 18 — (aka, Fra Angelico) patron of Christian artists born around 1400 near Florence. Among his most famous works are reportedly the Annunciation and Descent from the Cross plus frescoes in a Florence monastery.
- Blessed Jacinta and Francisco Marto, Feb. 20 — these Portuguese children received apparitions near Fatima. Their bios are fascinating but too intricate to summarize here.
- Blessed Luke Belludi, Feb. 24 — Became a Franciscan at age 20. Was a companion of St. Anthony of Padua and ultimately succeeded him. He has had a continual veneration since his death.
- Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio, Feb. 25 — (“Angel of Mexico”) Built a 466-mile road from Mexico City to Zacatecas in 10 years to facilitate agricultural trading and other commerce. Entered the Franciscans as a brother at age 72 where he collected alms for the friars for 25 years. Beatified in 1787 and known as patron of travelers.
- Blessed Daniel Brottier, Feb. 28 — Ordained around age 23 and quickly joined the missionary Congregation of the Holy Spirit which sent him to West Africa. Spent 52 months in the heart of WWI as a volunteer chaplain. He later helped established a project for orphaned and abandoned children in a Paris suburb where he died in 1936. Beatified in 1984.
Their “blessed” state means that there is evidence of a miracle (unless that person was a martyr) and can be honored liturgically in a specific region or within a certain group, according to AmericanCatholic.org and St. Anthony Messenger Magazine. Another miracle is needed before canonization. Catholic.org offers more information on the process.
