G is for Grand Canyon
Fourth graders at Ss. Simon and Jude School had a special guest read to them yesterday — one who took them on a statewide tour, so to speak.
Arizona state senator Debbie McCune-Davis, who represents District 14, read Barbara Gowan’s “G is for Grand Canyon” picture book to Ss. Simon and Jude students.
The 40-page book about the people, places, animals and characteristics of Arizona led to a discussion that fit in with standard curriculum about the development of the nation’s 48th state.
The classroom visit was part of its regular “Guest Reader” program which allows community leaders to read to the students and share a bit about their current work. The goal is to promote the importance of reading in every career.
I’ve thumbed through, if not checked out the book from the library. It is very informative, even if you’re beyond the elementary school target age. A former educator and author from Chandler who commented about the book on Amazon, agreed:
As a former educator and current author, I really enjoyed this book. There is so much you can do with the 2 tiered writing style in teaching kids. This approach lets the book grow with your child. The pictures, by Katherine Larson, are filled with great details too.
