“Brother André.” The struggles and miracles in the life of Holy Cross Brother André Bessette (1845-1937) — whose canonization is scheduled for Oct. 17 — are detailed in this biographical profile. From his modest position as doorman, Brother André not only increased devotion to St. Joseph, but built an oratory to this great saint in Montreal, a place of worship which has inspired Catholics in Canada and around the world. It is the largest shrine dedicated to St. Joseph in the world.

The 90-minute feature begins at 1 p.m. EDT Oct. 13 on EWTN.

While Canadian by birth, the canonization of Blessed André Bessette is big news for people throughout the Phoenix Diocese:

  • André House, a local organization serving Phoenix’s poor and homeless for 25 years — here’s the anniversary article — is rooted in the same works as its patron saint: hospitality and service to the poor. Holy Cross Father Eric Schimmel, director of André House and Br. Richard Armstrong, CSC, will be in Rome for the canonization.
  • Holy Cross priests, who continue to run St. John Vianney Parish in Goodyear, find strength in Blessed Brother André Bessette, one of the key figures in the congregation. Learn more from the Holy Cross Congregation’s vocations page. It has insights, photos and videos.
  • The Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco who also work at St. John Vianney Parish and School and the surrounding community, work closely with the Holy Cross priests. Blessed André and Blessed Basil Moreau, who founded the congregation, are among the local and global Holy Cross and Salesian faces depicted on a mixed-media painting at the school. The painting symbolizes the two orders and their work in the diocese.

St. John Vianney School parents Rene and Claudia Portillo created the mural for a visit from the Salesian Mother General in November 2009.
