Lullabies — retreat style
Did you catch the premiere of The Bishop’s Hour Monday on Immaculate Heart Radio KIHP 1310 AM or download the audio? If not, it will re-broadcast at 9 p.m. tonight.
I listened to it with The Catholic Sun staff Monday. Somewhere in that information-packed hour was the mention of the new web address — ASUCatholic.org — for the All Saints Catholic Newman Center at ASU’s Tempe campus. Fr. John Muir, parochial vicar of the Newman Center, briefly mentioned it on the air while discussing outreach to local college students.
Part of the Newman Center’s outreach included a Sept. 1 launch of the new website to include podcasts of homilies and teachings, a blog, an “Ask a Priest” feature and videos to both entertain and inform on topics like salvation, transubstantiation, the liturgy and more.
It was the Newman Center’s Facebook feed and a mention of its new YouTube channel, in particular that piqued my interest. Fr. John came across as a pretty dynamic and relatable priest on The Bishop’s Hour, so I was curious to see the young priest at a recent New Student Getaway. Check out the lullaby he offered on the first night:
I enjoyed it for a few reasons:
- It gave me a better insight to how priests are able to relate with college youth.
- It showed that the New Student Getaway, which I went on as the only transfer student several years ago — has continued to evolve.
- It made me recall the much-requested lullaby for our youth minister to play on a high school retreat: “The House at Pooh Corner.” Personally, I enjoyed Fr. John’s lullaby more. It also made me grateful that priests can carve out more time to spend with youth and young adults outside of the sacraments. I think the only time we saw priests on high school retreats was for reconciliation and Mass.
