It will be a new era for Holy Cross fathers. Fr. Hugh Cleary, the congregation’s leader for the last 12 years, the maximum term according to the order’s constitution, is being replaced.

Holy Cross Father Richard Warner

Fr. Richard Warner, CSC, was elected Superior General of the Congregation of Holy Cross during its general chapter meeting in Rome late last week. The news came through today.

Fr. Warner currently serves as director of campus ministry at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, a position he has held for at least 20 years. He also had a longtime dual role as counselor to former president, Fr. Edward Malloy. The institution awarded Fr. Warner an honorary doctorate of law in 1987.

Fr. Warner was ordained in 1966, taught in Chile and served as provincial superior in Indiana for nine years.

The Congregation of Holy Cross, founded in France in 1837 by Blessed Basil Moreau, sponsors several colleges and universities nationwide. Its priests have an educational, pastoral and missionary presence in 16 countries on five continents including Chile, East Africa, Mexico and the U.S.

Holy Cross Fathers serve in the Phoenix Diocese at St. John Vianney Parish in Goodyear and at André House, a soup kitchen near downtown Phoenix for the homeless and working poor.

Check out this recent Q&A with Fr. Bill Waack, former director of André House on his work there and vocation to the priesthood.
