Mother’s Day gift ideas

Posted by : ambria

Give mom flowers that are low-maintenance and help feed a family of four for 1-4 weeks.

Still looking for a way to honor your earthly mother this Sunday? Here are some Catholic/life-affirming ideas:

  • Help feed struggling families in her name — The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is giving the local community a chance to honor their mom by giving her “Flowers that Feed.” Moms will get a custom-designed gift/note card with a painted bouquet of flowers. The card will tell mom the number of hot, nourishing meals your purchase will provide struggling families in her name. St. Vincent de Paul operates five dining rooms throughout the Valley and has enough food to help another 17 nonprofit agencies.
  • Gift cards through your parish/Catholic school — If you’re inserting a gift card in with your greeting card, consider buying it through your local parish/Catholic school. That way, ministries and students will also benefit from your purchase. Gift cards generally range from sweets and dining to beauty, arts/crafts and expectant moms. Take a look at some participating schools.
  • Honor Maggie’s Place mothers — The annual campaign returns. For a suggested $5 donation, Maggie’s Place will do the card shopping and mailing for you. Proceeds help Maggie’s Place moms who find themselves pregnant and alone find internal strength to carry their child to term and develop attainable goals for themselves. Place your order.
  • Go international — Catholic Relief Services will send your mom an e-video card if you donate to its international efforts. CRS is the official overseas relief and development agency of the U.S. Bishops putting no less than 95 percent of its funds directly into its programs in public policy, emergencies, peace building and food security. It estimates that nearly 70 percent of the world’s 1.3 billion poor people are women and that women in developing countries are responsible for 60-80 percent of crop production. Watch the video card and place your order.
  • Get tickets for “Babies” documentary — The 88-minute film opens Friday and weaves the first year of life of babies in four distinct cultures. It celebrates the wonder, joy, beauty and mystery of humanity, according to press material. Here’s the trailer:
