Weekend calendar

Starting with a film screening and a Catholic high school play tonight, here are some events around the diocese this weekend to check out or keep in prayer:

MAAFA 21 movie — 6:30 p.m. April 29 at Christ the King Parish in Mesa. The feature-length film exposes the hidden Planned Parenthood plan to eliminate the African-American population. Details: call Debbie at (480) 844-4477. Seven parishes throughout the diocese have already shown the film. St. Peregrine Charity Golf Tournament — 12:30 p.m. May 1 Arizona Golf Resort in Mesa. Event includes golf, dinner, awards and raffle prizes in support of the St. Peregrine Shrine, which serves as a place of spiritual and practical support for cancer patients and their loved ones. Call (480) 844-4493 or visit the Cancer Shrine.

“Hollywood Hotel” presented by St. Mary’s drama students — 6 p.m. April 29-30; 2 p.m. May 1 on campus. This  laugh-happy situation comedy about
 careers in Hollywood stars three teenage girls from Missouri who decide to take
 Tinseltown by storm while renting a grungy cottage in a 
bungalow court — Hollywood Hotel.  Also features the tyrannical Mrs. Hook (the landlord) and a parade of eccentric characters who use the cottage 
as a gathering place. Check into Hollywood Hotel and check it out. Tickets are $5 each.

There’s state playoffs, celebrations and a memorial Saturday and Sunday.

Softball state tournament — 11 a.m. May 1, Jay Bell Field, 1100 N. 35th St. St. Mary’s plans to start its run for a state championship. ESPN’s RISE magazine named pitcher Dallas Escobedo as “arguably the No. 1 pitcher in the nation.” The 5A-I team is undefeated.

Crozier Gala — 6 p.m. May 1 at Camelback Inn. Join 730 guests (including 80 priests and four bishops) for an elegant evening honoring priests while raising money for the Catholic Community Foundation. Check out The Catholic Sun article or order tickets (enter RSVP code: Crozier2010).

25th anniversary Retrouvaille — 9 a.m. May 2 at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral. Join Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted for the weekly televised Mass. The liturgy is also a celebration of Retrouvaille’s 25th anniversary. The ministry helps Catholics struggling in their marriage. Luncheon and program follows at Mount Claret. Inmate death memorial/dedication — 9 a.m. May 2 Brophy College Preparatory. The Jesuit school is blessing and dedicating a plaque in memory of Marcia Powell, 48, who died of heat-related causes in an outdoor cage at an Arizona state prison nearly a year ago. Mass follows in the chapel at 10 a.m. in her honor and “all those in society who are lost or forgotten,” according to the press release. The project was the brainchild of an alumni. The plaque, to be placed at the chapel entrance, reads in part:

In memory of her and all those forgotten or neglected by society, may they finally rest in peace.The king will answer them:
“I assure you, as often as you did it for
one of my least brothers, you did it for me.”

Being Seeds of Nonviolence in the Workplace — 10:30 a.m.-noon May 2 at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale. The Phoenix chapter of Pax Christi will present ways to promote nonviolence in the workplace. They’ll likely draw on the inspirations of Mother Teresa, Sts. Francis and Clare of Assisi and Gandhi. Call (480) 948-7460 ext.130. Suggested donation is $5.
