The Arizona Catholic Conference (ACC) is the public policy agency for the Diocese of Gallup, the Diocese of Phoenix, and the Diocese of Tucson.

Arizona Catholic Conference is the policy arm of the state’s three dioceses.

The Arizona Catholic Conference, the policy arm of the state’s three dioceses, is urging Catholics to oppose immigration legislation before the state Senate.

“SB 1070 is a problematic anti-immigrant bill that will soon reach the floor of the Arizona Senate,” according to the conference. “While finding meaningful solutions to immigration issues is not easy, there are some efforts that may unintentionally have a negative impact on public safety.  Such is the case with SB 1070.”

The bill requires local police officers to investigate the immigration statues of “anyone with whom they make ‘legitimate contact’ and have reasonable suspicion’” of the person being undocumented, according to the conference.

“Under such a policy, victims of crimes are much less likely to report crimes because of a legitimate fear that they will be deported,” according to the conference.
