More last-minute gift ideas
When I wrote last “Shop local. Shop Catholic” last week, I completely spaced out two other great gift-giving guides:
- Catholic Sun book reviews – Every issue our Andrew Junker reviews current and often topical books written by and/or for Catholics. Some are novels, others are geared for children, prayer-oriented, anecdotal or instructional. Regardless, his reviews appeal to a wide variety of Catholic readers. Re-read the headlines and skim the review. I’m sure you’ll find at least one of them that makes a great gift. Personal favorites: Man’s best friend in the great beyond and Encounters with refugees. Chances are you won’t get the book by Christmas, but you can print out the review or the book cover and say the book is on its way.
- Catholics Come Home — The lay apostolate uses an interactive Web site to reach fallen-away Catholics and to strengthen the faith of active Catholics. Its online store offers a wealth of suggestions for books and CDs. All 14 categories deal directly with Church teaching from Mary and the saints, to the papacy to end times to salvation to marriage and family.
I just did a Google image search for “Catholic gifts” with the hopes of finding an image for this blogpost and found some other enticing links. Catholic Family Gifts offers a wide range of items including eight sport medals with “St. Christopher Protect Us” written around an image of a particular sport.
It also has 12 pages of gifts costing no more than $10. Some 85 of those items are books with a lot of them looking child-friendly. Would make a great gift for pre- and post-confirmation children in your life I would think. “Praying in the Presence of Our Lord: Prayers for Eucharistic Adoration” would likely be a wise investment of $6.95 as well.
