Weekend calendar
Filed under : From the Staff, Local News
Tomorrow marks the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and of the Diocese of Phoenix. Largely because of that, and the coming Christmas season, there are a lot of events going on this weekend.

Lots of chances to celebrate our patroness, Our Lady of Guadalupe, this weekend.
Here’s a quick look at some of them:
- Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration at Resurrection.
- Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery’s Guadalupe Festival. Hosted by the Sisters of St. Benedict.
- Guadalupe: Our Lady of the Roses. See JD’s blogpost about the opera and a video preview. It’s at the Phoenix Art Museum this weekend.
- Tamale Festival. Chances are, several Catholic parishes are selling their homemade tamales by the dozen. Proceeds beef up church ministries and needs. It’s this weekend in downtown Phoenix, both Saturday and Sunday, I think. Check your nearest store for details.
Other Catholic events don’t necessarily pertain to the season, but are worth your time nonetheless if you’re free:
- Poor Clare investiture. A Poor Clare sister discerning with the desert nuns since January will take the next step toward her final vows. She’ll get a new name and garments tomorrow at 10 a.m. during a Mass at St. Joan of Arc. Take a look at a similar story from 2007.
- Scouts religious emblem ceremony. Boy and girl scouts who have earned various religious emblem patches will be honored at a ceremony Sunday at St. Helen Parish in Glendale at 2 p.m.
