Donation match on for SVdP
Well, I slept through the annual benefit breakfast for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul this morning (late night with the Jaime Cortez concert as part of Christ the King Parish’s 50th celebrations), but apparently all is not lost. Organizers expected some 1,500 guests.
According to some SVdP tweets, you can still make donations online.
And the sooner the better as Ken Snyder, who apparently works on the dental side of the Virginia G. Piper Medical and Dental Clinic, announced a matching challenge up to $200,000. The clinic provides $3 million worth of services to the low-income and uninsured. More than 160 physicians and and dentists volunteer there.
Current and former clients generally speak at the breakfast. If you want a clear idea of who SVdP serves, and how abundant your life really is, check out their Helping the Poor blog.
You can also read about how one 60-year-old licensed practical nurse went from employed to homeless simply because of issues obtaining a fingerprint clearance card. Fortunately, SVdP was there to help. “They saved my life,” he said.
By the way, if you also missed this morning’s benefit breakfast and enjoy “dining out to help out,” join me and other community supporters at my favorite restaurant, Sweet Tomatoes, on Tuesday. SVdP will pocket proceeds from your bill — not sure how much — at any of its eight Valley locations. I would imagine the event is part of its outreach during National Homeless and Hunger Week, Nov. 15-21
