It’s been awhile, but you might recall reading an announcement in our Oct. 1 issue about All Saints Parish preparing to break ground for more worship space. Read after the jump for details on the Nov. 1 groundbreaking with Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted.

First, a little history lesson courtesy of the parish Web site:

  • All Saints was established in 1972. Parishioners gathered in a nearby hotel, a hall, the founding pastor’s home chapel and a mission chapel during the parish’s first two years.
  • Parish boundaries were quickly divided in 1978 when Holy Cross Parish was established.
  • All Saints became debt-free in 1982.
  • The parish has been planning its expansion project, dubbed “His Will, Our Mission,” since 2004.
  • The City of Mesa should have the building plans and begin to issue permits soon. Goundbreaking set for construction
The current worship space seats 640 people. The new one will fit 1,600.

MESA — The grounds at All Saints Parish are ready to grow.

Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted will celebrate the parish’s feast day by joining parish leaders in a ceremonial groundbreaking Nov. 1 for a new church that will double its capacity.

The new worship space sits just south of the current church where Catholics have been gathering since 1974.

Parishioners have raised more than $4 million for the project so far. That covers most of the building costs for the 35,000-square-foot facility.

The 1,600-seat church will feature energy-saving measures throughout. Donations are still being sought for the interior, including fixtures, furniture, equipment and stained-glass windows.

The groundbreaking begins at 1:30 p.m. at the parish, 1534 N. Recker Road, following the noon Mass. The celebration will continue throughout the afternoon with food and activities.
