Facing cancer with the faith community

Cancer awareness season seems to be upon us.

Not only is September ovarian cancer awareness month — as I learned when writing an article about various cancer support options in the diocese — but it’s also childhood cancer awareness month and prostrate cancer awareness month. Then of course comes breast cancer awareness month in October.

The diocesan ministry offers spiritual and pratical support for cancer patients and their families.

Fortunately, for those active in a faith community, there are also cancer-related groups and special events coming up to help those facing cancer and their families cope and find spiritual renewal and practical resources.

Here’s a quick sample of opportunities:

  • Fighting cancer with the faith community conference — Religious leaders from different faiths will gather Sept. 10 in Phoenix. They’ll discuss ways to establish and maintain support programs for parishioners facing cancer, their families and caregivers. They’ll also address outreach for those newly diagnosed and survivors. The daylong conference includes discussion groups, breakout sessions, a keynote address and prayer. Visit The Wellness Community for details and a list of other conferences and support groups.
  • St. Peregrine Wig Drive — The forthcoming St. Peregrine Chapel in Mesa — an outreach of the Healing through the Body of Christ Cancer Ministry — is holding a wig drive through September. The wigs will be cleaned and styled and given to cancer patients. Keep checking the chapel’s blog for details on the drive, building updates and for a funny picture of St. Peregrine sporting a wig.
  • Auction items needed Expect Miracles Gala — The Expect Miracles Gala benefiting the St. Peregrine Chapel isn’t until November, but organizers are seeking donations for the live and silent auctions now. Contact the cancer shrine for more information.
