Iraqi Christians

Chaldean Bishop Antoine Audo of Syria shares his fear with reporters that Christians who leave Iraq will never return in this Oct. 2008 file photo.
It’s been 10 months since J.D. shared the plight of Iraqi Christians with Catholic Sun readers. I must admit I haven’t heard much about them from Catholic or mainstream media since then.
Until this week, that is.
I heard during a K-Love news update this weekend that Iraq launched its first Christian radio station. While the station manager is rightly elated and eager to see its impact on the Iraqi and Kurdish people, it seems Islamic militants continue to drive out the Christian minority.
An Aug. 2 Our Sunday Visitor article reported on the matter. Like J.D. wrote in November, life for Christians in Iraq is uncertain, according to the article. A U.S.-Iraqi security agreement pulled all U.S. troops from urban areas June 30 with the rest, except for a small group of advisers, scheduled to leave by 2011.
Sargon Slewa, director general of an Assyrian Christian-run television channel, said attacks have intensified as a result.
