Living in today’s hi-tech world, I found it interesting that the term “low-power’ made recent headlines. Call-in day to support low-power radio is set for tomorrow according to a CNS story.

The call-ins will be to members of the Senate advocating the Local Community Radio Act of 2009. Arizona Senator John McCain is a co-sponsor.

Two Catholic leaders — an archbishop and president of the National Catholic Educational Association — wrote senators in April asking them to co-sponsor the bill. They said low-power FM stations increase diversity on the airwaves, serve the local community and provide valuable teaching opportunities.

That opportunity has been denied to several Catholic entities within the last year according to the article.

I can’t think of a low-power Catholic FM station serving the Valley, but area Catholics can find Radio Family Rosary on the AM dial KXXT AM.

Starting in September or October, area Catholics can tune into KXAM 1310 AM according to an article in a local parish bulletin. Immaculate Heart Radio acquired a radio property with enough signal strength to reach millions of Phoenix listeners. The lay Catholic apostolate already operates 21 EWTN affiliates throughout  California, New Mexico and Nevada.
