St. Maria Goretti students donated shoes to their Middle Eastern peers last year.

Some of you may remember reading a story last December about students at St. Maria Goretti preschool and kindergarten collecting shoes for peers in the Middle East. Their effort was through the budding WAMMS organization.

Thanks to them and other groups across the country, WAMMS — Walk a Mile in My Shoes — has shipped 43 boxes to the Middle East during its first year. The WAMMS concept, which hopes to spread peace by donating unwanted shoes to those in need, formed one year ago today (join the celebration).

Those boxes means more than 1,100 people, largely kids, can protect their feet and their body at large as they roam the streets. Another 1,700 pairs of shoes went to those in need locally.

The “Little Ol’ Lady and the Shoes” as WAMMS’ founder calls herself, regularly accepts shoe donations. She also accepts toiletry and comfort items for deployed soldiers who disperse the shoes. Learn more.
