As the Phoenix Diocese approaches its 40th anniversary, I found the headline, “Diocese to determine fate of Q.C. church” in yesterday’s East Valley Tribune intriguing.

The article seemed rather inconclusive — it’s still too early in the game — but it allowed me and other readers to learn more about the formation of our diocese.

Like Scottsdale’s old adobe mission, the Queen Creek church — reportedly the town’s second oldest place of worship —  was built by the sweat of the largely Mexican Catholic community.

Local Catholic now gather at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish across Ocotiilo Road from the original adobe Our Lady of Guadalupe church.  A forthcoming book offers a more comprehensive survey of the Phoenix Diocese’s formation and first 40 years.
