Schools roundup

Our Catholic schools are always up to something good. Learn how to choose the best one for your family.
I sort of thought that since publising our graduation issue, that we wouldn’t have much school news until we work on our “back to school” issue in August. I was wrong.
Schools stay plenty busy during the summer running summer school programs and camps. That’s also a “upgrade” time, both for the campus and for classroom materials.
Local schools are already welcoming new faces amongst the staff.
Here are some of the school-related news items that have come across my desk in the last week or so:
- Christ the King to open preschool — The K-8 school in Mesa is enrolling 4-year-olds in its first preschool class. Call (480) 844-4480 for more information.
- Mobile science lab — St. Timothy School in Mesa called me last week to say that $5,000 awarded to them in SRP’s Learning Grant May 29 will fund a mobile science lab. The microscopes will allow students to partner up for learning instead of competing for a handful of microscopes.
- New director, chaplain headed to Holy Trinity Newman Center — The Catholic spot for Northern Arizona University students in Flagstaff will officially welcome Fr. Matt Lowry to the vacant position July 1. New students are coming in too. The Newman Center has already handed out more than 200 brochures during summer orientations for incoming students. Three more orientations are scheduled.
- More robotics excellence — The sixth grade team at Christ the King School in Mesa placed third in the National Underwater Robotics Challenge over the weekend. Other local Catholic school students competed in Denmark last month.
- More athletic excellence — Jessica Petznick from Xavier College Preparatory, who was already named Arizona’s Girls Soccer Player of the Year, was named to the ESPN RISE Winter Girls’ Soccer All-American team.
Plus you might have noticed the recruitment work administrators are up to. Look for various open enrollment ads in The Catholic Sun or your parish bulletin.
