Fight for life
We often talk in our newspaper and in this blog about the fight for life, namely the pro-life cause aimed at ending abortion. We occasionally have the chance to talk about another “fight for life”: the fight to end the death penalty.
Case in point — the following articles:
- Death penalty protest — local Catholics prayed near the site where an execution was to take place in 2007
- Statement opposing the death penalty — from Arizona’s bishops
- Is the death penalty needed today? — Bishop Thomas J. Olmsetd’s column
The fight for life is taking center stage this week on “This is the Day,” a half hour talk show on CatholicTV. The original episode aired live this morning, but will be rebroadcast tonight and in the coming days before being archived online.
The episode features Sr. Helen Prejean, CSJ, author of “Dean Man Walking,” which inspired the award-winning film about Sr. Helen’s interactions with a death row inmate. She discusses the book and movie on “This is the Day” as well as her second book, “Death of the Innocents.”
She also promotes the “Dead Man Walking School Theatre Project” which hopes to deepen reflections on one of today’s key moral issues.
Sisters from different orders who coordinate the annual “Nun Run” — a 24-hour visit of various religious orders for women exploring religious life — are also on the show.
