Graduation season

We’re midway through coverage of graduation season at local Catholic high schools.

I attended one Baccaleaureate Mass and two graduations. The Catholic Sun also interviewed at least one student from all six Catholic high schools in the Valley (look for coverage in our June 4 issue and on YouTube).

While I was at some of the campuses, I found a lot of the published memories and “last will and testament” too fun not to share.

So from Seton, we have:

Kelly Beauvais looks at the tassel on Charles Baucom's mortarboard moments after they received their diplomas from Seton May 16. Catholic High school is but a memory for many students.

Last will and testament

  • I, Alex Aguiar, leave my non-uniform shorts to Ms. O’Reily because she gave me enough detentions to have earned them.
  • I, Lisette Cole, leave all memories of break to Mrs. Moreno because she’ll miss them when I’m gone.
  • I, Brandon Freidhof, leave the words “get a haircut” to all the teachers because now I can grow my hair as long as I want.
  • I, Kyle Mahoney, leave my  position on the golf team to someone with big feet because they have big shoes to fill.
  • I, Sareena Medina, leave the incoming Queen of Peace students to Manny Acosts because we all went to the same school and they need mentoring.

Read some memories, words of wisdom and a graduation prayer after the jump.

A couple of Xavier memories:

My best memory from Xavier is dancing with my best friend around the bell tower the day of the lights out rally and Sr. Lynn reprimanding us for killing the baby blades.
   — Mary Christensen

My favorite memory at Xavier was taking naps before lacrosse practice on air mattresses in the parking lot! Good times. :)
   — Marissa Bouley

Words of wisdom from Xavier faculty:

Be not afraid of God’s laws— they are liberating.
Be not afraid of God’s grace— it is indispensable
Be not afraid of God’s call— it is your only path to happiness.
Be not afraid!
   — Mr. Ahern,  theology

Two bits of wisdom that I have learned and hold to be true come from my hero, St. Francis of Assisi. He says, “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” Francis also adds, “Above all the grace and the gifts that Christ give to His belived is that of overcoming self.”
   — Mr. Esch, theology

Remember in all your life endeavors you are performing for an audience of one (your creator) and when He applauds you then you know that you have obtained true success!” (author unknown)
   —Ms. Golden, bookstore

And what blogpost about Catholic school graudates wouldn’t be complete without a prayer? I found this in the Our Lady of the Lake parish bulletin today:

Prayer for Graduates

A Seton grad prays during commencement exercises.

A Seton grad prays during commencement exercises.

Father of Light and Wisdom, thank you for giving me a mind that can know and a heart that can love.

Help me to keep learning every day of my life — no matter what the subject may be. Let me be convinced that all knowledge leads to you and let me know how to find you and love you in all the things you have made.

Encourage me when life is difficult and when I am tempted to give up. Enlighten me when my brain is slow and help me to grasp the truth held out to me.

Grant me the grace to put my knowledge to use in building the kingdom of God on earth so that I may enter the kingdom of God in heaven.
