Immigration basics, Part 1

Posted by : J.D. Long-García

At last weeks National Workshop on Christian Unity, Tucson Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas spoke about the Church’s position on immigration reform. The bishop, vice president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,  explained the U.S. Catholic bishops’ five principles to guide immigration policy. They’re the same five principles we’ve been hearing for a while now, and they’re still true.

It’s good to revisit the teaching, I think, because it’s still true. The same can be said of the Arizona bishops’ “You Welcomed Me.” (available on our main Web site) It’s a solid document that Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted and Bishop Kicanas, along with other Catholic bishops in Arizona, published in December 2005. While four years ago seems like a long time to the modern mind, in terms of Church history, the document came out recently.

A post on the U.S. bishops’ Justice for Immigrants campaign will be posted later. Bishop Kicanas talked about that during the same April 28 session.
