Student penny drive yields thousands

Our Lady of Mount Carmel students, with the help of a local bank, count pennies by the handful. The cash will go to the Elizabeth House.
Students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Tempe concluded their Lenten penny drive last week. The drive was part of the school’s yearlong focus on the works of mercy. Administrators hoped that by asking the students to collect pennies, every student could not only participate, but participate often.
That they did. The school’s 500 students raised $1,430 in pennies during the 40 days of Lent. The Yiddish Proverb published in the school’s weekly newsletter proved true: “A penny is a lot of money, if you have not got a penny.”
Mid First Bank matched the students’ contribution for hitting the $1,000 mark.
The money will benefit Elizabeth House, a Maggie’s Place home in Tempe. The expectant and moms of newborns or infants living at Elizabeth House are in desperate need of box fans to prepare for the coming summer heat. They also need:
- a can opener
- stamps
- masking tape
- a baby gate
- bottle brushes
- and more (these needs are urgent. See the full list)
