You may have seen or read about the “See Kili Our Way” trip scheduled for June in mainstream media lately. The climb is put together by the Foundation for Blind Children, an Arizona nonprofit which helps blind and visually-impaired children, adults and their families lead rather independent and dignified lives.

Turns out, there is a bit of a Catholic angle to the story as well. Ryan Stelzer, a freshman at Brophy College Preparatory, is one of 16 sighed guides training to lead a blind client up Mt. Kilimanjaro this summer. Stelzer is guiding the youngest blind climber, Max Ashton. If the pair make it to the top over the eight-night journey, Ashton will be the youngest blind climber to do so. Check out their projected journey.

As you can imagine, it takes a lot of money to get 16 sighted guides and eight blind clients to Tanzania to climb Africa’s highest mountain — 19,340 feet — and the world’s tallest freestanding mountain.
