Baseball hits parishes, Catholic schools
Ok, so not literally, but baseball fever has hit some parishes and Catholic schools throughout the diocese.
Students at Xavier and Brophy college preparatories are wrapping up rehearsal of the spring production, “The Baseball Show.”
Directed by Xavier’s drama teacher along with a sophomore and senior assistant, the show places the audience in the bleachers (literally) for close up seats to the game of a co-ed minor league baseball team. This light-hearted comedy features a series of vignettes narrated by a zealous umpire that takes fans from the national anthem through the bottom of the ninth inning.

Parishes are benefitting from some of this month’s real baseball games, better known as spring training. The Men’s Club at St. Patrick and Our Lady of Perpetual Help parishes raise money through concession sales and parking lot fees respectively to benefit their ministries and parishes. Churchgoers at St. Vincent de Paul Parish help with security and crowd control.
While we’re talking baseball, I read in St. Mary’s High School’s newsletter that three of their baseball players spent a week in the Dominican Republic earlier in the school year to share their love of the game. They came back with a greater understanding of third world poverty.
