Seeing more green
While there’s lots of talk these days about there being a lack of money for a host of businesses, families, activities and every day necessities, as a diocese, we’re seeing more green in another way.
I attended our annual Trip Reduction Program today to fill out a survey on how many miles I commute to work each day and how I get there. I figure they do it every February as that is Rideshare Month according to Valley Metro. I was told, when gas prices shot up months ago, more employees found carpool buddies, rode the bus or lightrail.
Staff at the Diocesan Pastoral Center has been encouraging eco-friendly forms of travel for the last 14 years. Xavier college Preparatory stands as the diocesan leader though with 18 years under their belt.
That’s not the only Catholic school around the Valley looking at ways to help the environment:
- Students across the way at Brophy College Preparatory finished its two-week Summit on Human Dignity yesterday where they renewed their commitment to sustainability and stewardship. The lineup of speakers looked impressive. The Web site even includes a handy list of things we can all do now to take better care of our environment.
- I learned this week that five eighth-graders at St. John Bosco School are participating in the Lexus Eco Challenge. It’s designed to empower students to take action to improve the environment. The team is promoting alternative forms of transportation to reduce pollution. Consider signing their pledge. They’re shooting for 500 pledges.
