Remembering Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN

Sr. Dorothy Stang, a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, is pictured in a 2004 file photo in Belem, northern Brazil.
Two hired gunmen shot and killed Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN, in Brazil, where she worked to defend the land rights of rural peasants and the Amazon rainforest.
Her death four years ago today garnered international attention to the exploits of landowners and loggers in the South American country and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are seeing things change.
Sr. Dorothy “isn’t the only one,” said Sr. Joan Krimm, SNDdeN, from the motherhouse in Cincinnati in an article published in The Catholic Sun. “She just happened to be the only old, American nun and it made the papers. But when she was killed, there had to be more than 800 killed before her.”
Sr. Dorothy moved to Brazil more than 40 years ago to help poor farmers and their families. While in Phoenix, Sr. Dorothy was known as Sr. Mary Joachim. She was a teacher and principal at Most Holy Trinity Catholic School from 1953 to 1966, the year she began her missionary work in Brazil.
She is well remembered by the local community. Here are some stories about her.
