Catholic Headlines

Boston College is facing some challenges reestablishing its Catholic identity. The Boston Globe reports that the college recently completed an eight-year project “to dramatically increase the presence of Roman Catholic religious symbols on campus,” but not everyone on the faculty is happy.

The Associated Press today ran an article about communities preparing for immigration enforcement raids. While in Phoenix, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s department has recently been in the news, it’s nice to get some insight from other states, in this case Nebraska.

Also today, politics.co.uk reported that British Catholics are welcoming the Vatican’s acceptance of evolution.

“I think it’s about time,” said Seamus Crowe, spokesman for the Catholic Missionary Union, told politics.co.uk. “I can only speak for myself as a Catholic but I think it’s great and the wonder of our creation with the wonder of evolution is brilliant. I’m glad they’ve done it, it can only be good.”

The Vatican’s openness to the theory of evolution didn’t start yesterday, though. Or even last month.
The Wikipedia article is helpful, but can be confusing. It seems to refer to a lot of marginally related teachings. But it does quotes Pius XII’s Humani Generis:

“The Church does not forbid that…research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter.”

The Church’s openness to faith being complemented my reason predates 1950. Some might argue that faith and reason we’re bound together from the early days of the Church, with a few hiccups along the way.

And if you want to get an sense of the nationwide effort to fight FOCA, check out an article from San Juan, Texas.
