The Souper Bowl at St. Andrew the Apostle

For those of you still mourning the Arizona Cardinals’ tragic loss in yesterday’s Super Bowl, I may have some news that will cheer you up. They won the Souper Bowl of Caring at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Chandler.

The youth ministry held a food drive during the weekend Masses to coincide with the Super Bowl. Parishioners placed their donations on tables designated as the Cardinals’ end zone and the Steelers’ end zone. Barb Lishko, coordinator of youth ministry, said it was a blowout. All of the food benefitted the parish’s Good Samaritan food bank.

On a related note, parishioners at St. Rose in Anthem donated nearly 2,250 pounds of food for the Foothills Food Bank. Catholics at the parish’s mission, Good Shepherd, donated 266 pounds. Catholics also donated $110 in cash.

Instead of collecting food, two dozen young adults at the All Saints Newman Center in Tempe spent Super Bowl morning selling food. They hosted a Super pancake breakfast Feb. 1 with proceeds — all $892 worth — helping the young Catholics continue rebuilding efforts in New Orleans. The young adults are preparing to spend their Spring Break in the devastated city. Click here to read about preparations for one of their previous trips.
