Catholic schools help Maggie’s Place

Tomorrow marks the end of Catholic Schools Week. It was a week marked by creative classroom activities, spirited dress and hair days, prayer and service activities.

For whatever reason, many schools chose Maggie’s Place as their benefactor. I’m thinking the recent fire at the Magdalene House, the birthplace of Maggie’s Place, had something to do with it. Nonetheless, the 16 moms and 10 babies living in one of the three Maggie’s Place homes in the Valley will be better off as a result of hundreds of students at the following Catholic schools who made small sacrifices to help out:

  • Some 200 Christ the King students in Mesa raised more than $1,700 from a loose change drive this week. They boosted their own collection with a “Life is a Gift” day when students could dress out of uniform — but still in a T-shirt bearing a positive message — by donating at least $1 to Maggie’s Place.

Administrators at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Avondale broke down their drive for Magdalene House by grade. Students donated detergent, clothes, cleaning supplies, diapers, formula and other baby supplies. They also held a “buck-a-jean” day for Magdalene House.

  • Blessed Sacrament Preschool and Kindergarten collected baby and parenting books for Maggie’s Place.
  • Students — 530 of them — at St. Mary-Basha School in Chandler raised $650 during a buck-a-jean day for Maggie’s Place earlier this month. Parents matched that amount sending $1,300 to the organization.
