Bourgade writers win award
The Eagle’s Eyrie, the student newspaper at Bourgade Catholic High School, earned first place with a special merit award from the American Scholastic Press Association last month. Sr. Mary McGreevy, principal, announced the award in this month’s school newsletter.

Bourgade Catholic High School's journalism students — Sarah Hose, editor-in-chief; Cori Zimny, copy editor; design/photography editor Steven Torres; sports editor Jordan DAvies; and Michael Roasa, Danielle Bryant, Lilia Hidalgo and Sarah Sanchez, reporters, earned top honors for their writing skills. Freshman through seniors can take the one-year elective journalism course that is responsible for publishing the Eagle’s Eyrie eight times per year. Each issue is filled with news, feature stories, editorials, sports news in addition to reviews of music, movies and restaurants.
Some of the judges’ comments read, “the superior academic excellence of your newspaper should be shared with the neighboring schools in your area.”
This isn’t the first time the association awarded the Eagle’s Eyrie for its excellence. The newspaper has also earned past honors from Quill & Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, National Association of Press Women, Arizona Latino Media Association, National Scholastic Press Association and the Arizona Newspapers Foundation.
On a related note, senior Steven Torres, won the Freedom Forum’s Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship Award, which is presented to one high school senior male and one female journalist. He won an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to accept the award, a $1,000 scholarship and is now also eligible for a $50,000 scholarship.
