U.S. bishops misusing grant money?

The American Civil Liberties Union is claiming that the U.S. bishops are imposing their “religious views” on victims of human trafficking, according to an Associated Press story published Monday.

You see, the bishops won’t let any agency they support provide abortions, contraception or emergency contraception. Am I the only one not surprised?

They also say the bishops are imposing “religious beliefs.” We’re coming up on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and you can read about the upcoming events planned to commemorate the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the current issue of The Catholic Sun. But is being against abortion really a religious belief? What religion? Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim…. ehm… most all of them?

Is telling the truth a religious belief too? I’m a little tired of people calling something a “religious belief” as if that makes it somehow invalid.

The U.S. bishops receive money to help victims of human trafficking and they don’t provide abortions, contraception or emergency contraception. I’m OK with that. The U.S. government gives taxpayer money to abortion clinics. I’m not OK with that. Let’s talk about what “misusing funds” really means.
