Brophy soccer — not just for kicks
I just got distracted on Brophy’s Web site while following a lead for a different blogpost — I’ll likely get to that one tomorrow. Meanwhile, I thought I should pass along what I found.
Second from the top of their “News and Events” column is an enticing link about the soccer team’s “Goals for Sierra Leone” project. That led me to a brief article posted last week to the online version of ESPN RISE, a national magazine distributed to some 7,000 high schools as a way of celebrating student-athlete accomplishments.
The article highlights Goals for Sierra Leone, a project adopted by Brophy’s varsity team this year to buy medical equipment or other necessities for amputee soccer players in war-torn Sierra Leone. Each player and the coach donates $1 per goal, per game to the cause, according to the article.
It doesn’t specify how, but the project was a player’s idea. Alberto Texidor, who got his team to help Sierra Leone, plans to major in international business and global management.
The team raised $350 in five of its 27 games so far. Last year’s team played beyond the regular season to win the state championship.
