Fargo Bishop Samuel Aquila said vice president-elect Joe Biden is struggling with his conscience over his support for abortion, according to a Catholic News Agency story published Saturday.

“The nice thing about Biden, at least he says his conscience bothers him, which is good,” Bishop Aquila said in an interview with The Grand Forks Herald.

The North Dakota bishop spoke with the paper after the U.S. bishops’ fall meeting in Baltimore, where they pledged not to yield ground to the incoming Obama administration on the issue of abortion.

Bishop Aquila has also called for a greater respect for the dignity of human life in his column, published in his diocese’s newspaper, New Earth.

“Throughout the last several months I have been surprised and saddened at how little some Catholics know and accept the teaching of the Church on the matter of abortion,” he wrote in his November column. Catholics need to promote the Gospel of Life and understand, as Pope Benedict XVI and his predecessors have made definitive and clear, that the question of the moral legality of abortion is non-negotiable. It is always and everywhere wrong, and this moral truth must be enshrined in law in every civil society.”
