Students honored for honoring Veterans

Posted by : ambria

I know Veterans Day was just over a week ago, but I just got more information on how one Catholic school paid tribute to our servicemen and women. Seventh and eighth-grade students at Christ the King School in Mesa enter the essay contest each year sponsored by the Carl T. Hayden Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The center also sponsors the annual parade in downtown Phoenix.

Seventh grader Kristina Carrieres and eighth-grader Kayla Stevason placed first and second, respectively, in the junior high division. They earned $200 and $150 each for their efforts. The girls enjoyed a breakfast at the VA Medical Center in their honor last month and rode on the Hall of Flame fire truck during the Veterans Day parade as part of their reward as well.

Additionally, the eighth grade teacher received a special award yesterday for “Best Essays Written from a School.” Mendy Bayda, the school and parish’s coordinator of development, said the award committee was very impressed with the quality of writing across the board.
