Kids split up on marriage issue

I returned to the Kids Voting Arizona Web site today to see how the state’s youth did in their mock election. It looks like they agreed with adults: Barack Obama won the presidency according to the nearly 301,500 youth whose votes were counted by 7:02 p.m. last night. He won with 57.13 percent of the vote.

In scrolling down to skim the other results, I found something troubling. Proposition 102, the marriage amendment defining the sacrament as between one man and one woman, passed by only five votes. And I don’t see anything about the votes being final yet.

Our staff posted a few blogs about the issue in the months leading up to the election.

I doubt there’s a way of finding out how many of these kid voters were Catholic, but we do know at least some attend a Catholic school (and I just learned that there were many Catholic schools involved than we learned about up front). When the Catholic school kids weren’t voting for president, they were pretty quiet about their choices, but I would hope that they are among the majority — albeit slight — who asserted that marriage should be between one man and one woman.

I found the following ad to protect marriage online. It appears to be from 2006 and for another jurisdiction, but the approach to the issue from a kid’s perspective is universal. And there’s a biblical reference involved. Take a look:
