Faith in action
As part of Pope John XXIII School’s “Faith in Action” program, 10 sixth graders from the Scottsdale school spent an evening serving families in need in downtown Phoenix earlier this week.
Apparently, six hours of work in the classroom wasn’t enough for these students as they spent another two to three hours in the family dining room at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s main campus. They set dozens of tables and served 300-350 hearty meals to low-income families Oct. 27. They also cleaned up afterward and washed the dishes.

Their night of service was special for two reasons:
- Although the school’s sixth graders have been serving in the dining hall for years, this marked the first class interested in making their visit a monthly rather than a yearly affair.
- Each child who came for dinner that night walked away with a full belly and a Halloween costume (batman, spiderman, princesses and other typical character pieces). It’s unknown who donated the costumes, the effort was another way of showing their faith in action.
