U.S. Bishops: Fight Roe and support pregnant women

Posted by : andrew

US Bishops say pro-life efforts should take many forms.

Yesterday, the USCCB released a joint statement from Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia — head of the conference’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities — and Bishop William Murphy of Rockville Centre, NY, head of the conference’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.

Here’s a link to the press release.

The statement emphasizes that the pro-life fight is waged on many fronts. Catholics should do what they can to change the laws, and not accept that Roe has absolute permanence. They should also do all they can to provide support and assistance to women who are contemplating aborting their babies.

Mike Phelan, director of the Phoenix Diocese’s Office of Marriage and Respect Life Issues, recently highlighted all the areas where pro-lifers need to focus.

After saying that prayer lays the foundation for all other efforts, Phelan listed “legislative efforts, education and [support for] the grass-roots network of organizations that provide assistance to women in crisis pregnancies.”

It’s not an either/or proposition, but a both/and. It’s heartening to see the bishops release this statement jointly from the pro-life and justice/human development offices. Both focuses are needed to truly build a culture of life.
