Catholic News Service published a story last week dealing with ballot questions Catholics will face in the coming November elections.

Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted made it into the story for his stand on Proposition 102. (Read The Catholic Sun story on the measure on our Web site. Also, see the bishop’s video about the proposition played at parishes around the diocese on our YouTube channel.)

In Arizona, Bishops Thomas J. Olmsted of Phoenix and Gerald F. Kicanas of Tucson urged Catholics to vote “yes” on Proposition 102, which would amend the state constitution to read: “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state,” Catholic News Service reported.

“Some aspects of Catholic teaching require the use of prudential judgment, as to which course of action may be the most desirable,” said Bishop Olmsted in a video message shown at all Masses Sept. 13-14. “Other parts of Catholic teaching involve issues that are nonnegotiable, ones on which Catholics cannot legitimately disagree. The definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman is one such issue.”

Bishops in California and Florida supported similar propositions in their states.
