Piling it up for charity

Face it. A teen’s room can easily look like this. So many clothes, but “nothing to wear.”
Knowing this and knowing that local outreach ministries worldwide are almost always in need of clothing to give to the poor and homeless, Life Teen challenged Catholic youth to give away 50,000 pounds worth of extra clothes that they no longer wear.
The international youth ministry asked Life Teen youth groups to bring their clothes to their Sept. 28 meeting. Nearly 270 groups across the United States and Canada brought in nearly 450,000 pounds worth of clothes — that’s an average of nearly 2,100 pounds per parish. The clothes went to each group’s local Society of St. Vincent de Paul — whose feast day is Sept. 28 — or another community charity.

The Webmaster at Life Teen has been posting photos of the effort ever since. Check them out and see if you spot anyone from St. Jerome Parish or Blessed Sacrament Parish in Scottsdale (at right). A few other diocesan parishes participated as well.
The youth spent the rest of their meeting talking about social justice issues and charity. Steve Allgeyer, one of Life Teen’s many bloggers, posted the following about the inaugural event:
“What a great night to give God the glory for all that He has blessed us with,” Allgeyer said.
