End of summer not end of Valley hunger

Hungry? So are a lot of other people.

Earlier this month, I found myself with several essential items — all but the milk on sale — in my shopping cart, but not a dime on me to help pay for them.

Nor did my shopping companion who planned the outing without my involvement until we were at the store. Luckily, he had a credit card available.

Rising prices seemingly everywhere have forced families to “buy now, pay later” for some of their daily essentials. Others don’t have such a luxury and sometimes go without.

How about helping those families out a bit this weekend?

More than 80 Bashas’ stores throughout the state are participating in the “Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation” food drive through Aug. 31. They’re selling $1 icons at their cash registers that shoppers can buy and hang in the store. Proceeds benefit local food banks and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, all of which often experience shortages this time of year.

“Family budgets are really under attack,” Susan de Queljoe of St. Vincent de Paul said in a press release. “We’re seeing more people than ever before asking for help in feeding their children.”

The $1 donation shouldn’t effect your family much, but will greatly impact countless families. These agencies really know how to stretch a dollar.

For more information or to donate, visit your nearest Bashas’ store by Aug. 31.
