Brophy’s football season kicks off this weekend
Expect Brophy College Preparatory’s campus to become a red zone today. That’s because the #1 ranked varsity football team asked fellow students to wear their official “Game Day” T-shirts in honor of tomorrow’s season opener.
They’ll play Bishop Gorman High School in the Sollenberger Classic Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. inside Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium.
Brophy earned the right to return to the Arizona Cardinals’ home after winning the 2007 state championship among 5A Division I schools on the same field last December.
Bishop Gorman, Nevada’s state champs, is the only high school in the Las Vegas Diocese.
Having Catholic opponents at the annual game that honors a former sports historian for the Arizona Interscholastic Association is nothing new. According to its press release for this weekend’s game, Brophy beat Tucson’s Salpointe Catholic High School last year. This marks the third year of the classic.
I think the Broncos, who were also state champs in 2005 and are reigning regional champs since 2004, seem pretty pumped for the season. They have a countdown clock marking the 2008 season kickoff. And my guess is, they look forward to September 14 and September 21 when the team’s Web site says the Broncos will be on NBC during NFL’s halftime.
For ticket information for this weekend’s game, go to the stadium’s box office or ticketmaster.
