Matt Maher on ’20′

A few weeks back, I was listening to ’20: The Countdown Magazine’ on my way to Mass. (The show airs locally on KLOVE, 89.1 FM). The radio program’s top 20 songs are the 20 “most listened to” songs on Christian radio (details).

The song coming in at number 10 that week was Matt Maher’s “For Your Grace is Enough.” I don’t know a lot about these things, but, I thought, “this has to be the highest any Catholic musician has made it on a this show.” I couldn’t believe it. I was listening to Matt Maher, who has served St. Timothy Parish as a music minister for many years, on a nationally broadcast radio show.

Anyway, so this morning I thought I’d check if Maher was still on the list. Well, not only is he still on the list, he’s number two, second to Third Day’s “Call My Name.”

“Your Grace is Enough” was first popularized on the protestant music scene by musician Chris Tomlin, a friend of Maher’s. It first appeared on Maher second album, “Welcome to Life.” The version on the top 20 list is taken from his latest offering, “Empty and Beautiful.” (Read Rebecca Bostic’s feature about the album)

From what I understand, there’s quite a story behind the song and it’s coming to prominence, though I’m not privy to the details. Here’s Maher on “Your Grace is Enough.”

While I hope the song makes it to the top of the list, I have a feeling Maher will be happy no matter what. His song is a strong reminder that God’s grace “is enough” for all of us.

(Also of note: Maher will be playing at World Youth Day in Australia. Check his video blog from his Web site, www.mattmahermusic.com)

Matt played “Your Grace is Enough” — and what I assume were other songs from his new album — for the nearly 1,000 pilgrims at the Youth Arise International festival in Brisbane, Australia July 10-14.

Although I returned to the room to get some work done, I heard his concert July 10 was phenomenal.

Matt and his band helped keep us centered in worship during the closing Mass of the festival as well.
